Fanime 2015

Last year, I had no clue what to expect from one of Northern California’s biggest Anime Convention. But this year I came prepared. The streets filled with streams of Kill La Kill characters, Titans, ninjas, school girl uniforms, Street Fighters, giant mechas… Yea… Kha’Zix just walked across the street…If it had a part in an anime, gaming, or comics, it was here… This is Fanime 2015.

Last year, I took notes from some photographers. I notice full studio set-ups with strobes, and securing key locations to shoot. So I grabbed a monopod, attached my speed light on it, and started calling over cosplayers. At first it wasn’t so bad… But then I quickly became really really bored…

I love anime, and gaming, it has always been a major part of my life, but I also enjoy photography… But why wasn’t I feeling right? After about 2 hours of sitting, and shooting in one area, I made my way back to the car.

I threw the monopod, flash, backpack, and just kept my camera. I started to walk back, and suddenly… I started to realized why I fell in love with my fellow Otakus… We know how to GEEK THE FI_I(|< OUT!

To me it wasn’t all about getting good shots, it was admiring the art, cosplay, talking to people that knew what the hell I mean when I say “The cake is a lie” or “Bronze Life” or “Oro?”, it was good to be around good people, with a very common ground that we all can relate to. Fanime has the environment that has the ability to merge completely strangers to feel related to one another. This was the meaning of Geeking… and well it’s one thing I love.

This years Fanime was a major step up for me. Considering that my one year as a pro photographer is just around the corner! I remember in 2014, I came to Fanime by myself, feeling shy, and very much just practicing my skills. Coming back to Fanime a year later, I felt the nostalgic feeling that I felt on my first anime convention. I felt like I was truly home.

It was fun meeting everyone, and I was so excited to talk to some cosplayers this year!  Hell even I went as Kakashi from Naruto! (Yea I know, no white hair…)

I really want to make something more interesting though for the next major con… Hmm who to be… I can’t wait til next year! Actually, I am trying to make my way down to Comic Con in San Diego. But I’l figure out the details. I want to thank everyone at Fanime! The production was great, and I can’t wait to see what next year’s event will have for us! It was a great Memorial Day weekend… But I have work, so I better knock out… Goodnight, Goodnight…
